Griff Maclaurin and Steve Yates were part of the International Column of anti-fascist volunteers who marched into Madrid, bolstering the city's defences against the assault of General Franco's rebel armies. They were killed in battle within two days of arriving.

1942 / Women Jurors Act allows women to sit on juries:

The Act provided for women aged between 25 and 60 to have their names placed on the jury list on the same basis as men – if they so desired. New Zealand’s first female juror was Miss Elaine R. Kingsford, who sat on a case at the Auckland Supreme Court in 1943. The sensational case of the Maungatapu murders came to a grisly end when three members of the ‘Burgess gang’ were hanged shortly before 8.30 a.m. at Nelson gaol. Joseph Sullivan, the fourth member of the gang, avoided the death penalty after turning Queen’s evidence and testifying against his co-accused.

Inspired by footwear he had seen in Japan, Auckland businessman Morris Yock and his son Anthony began manufacturing this simple rubber footwear in their Onehunga garage in 1957. The name ‘jandal’ combined the words ‘Japanese’ and ‘sandal’.

The New Zealand Security Intelligence Service (NZSIS) aimed to catch Sutch in the act of passing information to Dimitri Aleksandrovick Razgovorov, a Russian diplomat. The pair had been under surveillance since April, after the NZSIS chanced upon what they believed was a clandestine meeting between them. They believed that if caught in the act Sutch would come clean and cooperate with them.

The 1987 Rugby World Cup

Although international rugby has been played for well over a century, the Rugby World Cup is a relatively recent phenomenon. The first tournament took place in May and June 1987, with games played in both New Zealand and Australia. 1930 - "George Nepia plays last All Blacks test

The 19-year-old fullback Nepia was one of the stars of the 1924–5 All Blacks, dubbed the ‘Invincibles’. He played in all 32 matches on the team’s tour of the British Isles, France and Canada. Still only 25, he appeared in his last test match in 1930, in the final game of the home series against the British Lions. The All Blacks won the match 22–8 to clinch the series 3–1."
